The celebratory concluding concert of the jubilee year will present a lyrical fairytale, concerto grosso and even a world premiere of a contemporary composer.

The concert for clarinet and orchestra was composed this year by Jiří Teml (*1935), who has commented upon his work: “Clarinet has always interested me due to its range, musical compatibility, tone colour and the virtuoso articulation possibilities”.

Suk’s suite A Fairy tale Op. 16, written in the years from 1899 to 1900 at the request of the poet Julius Zeyer to accompany his scenic fairy tale Radúz and Mahulena, belongs to the golden fund of Czech music. The composer later reflected upon the composing process in saying: “The most beautiful years of my life have begun”, and he made no secret of the fact that he drew a comparison between the alluring Mahulena and his bride, Dvořák’s daughter Otilka, whom he had married several months before he began composing. The concert and the jubilee year of the festival will be concluded by the monumental Bohuslav Martinů’s Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra H 207. The work, composed in the style of concerto grosso, a style in which the soloist’s role is substituted by a string quartet, was finished by Martinů in France in the June of 1931, with it premiering a year later in Marseille. We shall hear it as played by the Pavel Bořkovec Quartet accompanied by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra.
